Photographs of Gay Life in Communist Czechoslovakia, 1939-1979

Abstract

This collection contains 267 photographs depicting the life of a group of gay men in Czechoslovakia from 1939 to 1979, where same-sex sexual activity was decriminalized in 1962. Photographs show the men either clothed, in various stages of undress, or completely nude. Images are taken at the beach, on vacation, indoors, and exploring unidentified places.

This series consists of ninety-eight contact sheets printed from thousands of Ralf-Finn Hestoft's 35mm black-and-white negatives of photographs taken during 1979 and 1980 for the Daily Northwestern and the Northwestern University Syllabus yearbook. The photographs show students (informal photographs and portraits); faculty, staff, and administrators; campus scenes and events, athletics and speakers; and off-campus scenes.

William Reddick Martin was a photojournalist employed by the Fort Collins Coloradan. He later became a photographer for the U.S. Airforce during World War II. The collection reflects Martin’s student-era efforts at various forms of photography – photojournalistic, narrative, artistic, commercial, and portraiture – and appear to document his experiences in and around Denver, Colorado.

Robert R. McCormick. Miscellaneous photographs of Cantigny

Abstract

This series contains groups of photographic negatives and prints of Cantigny farm and grounds (Robert R. McCormick's estate in Wheaton, Illinois) found among the unprocessed Tribune Company Archives materials. One group of negatives shows a large event (or several similar events); another contains aerial views of the main house and immediate surroundings; a third shows a tree on the grounds being felled.

These photographic transparencies show Col. Robert R. McCormick, Maryland McCormick (his second wife), his associates and properties. The images include reunions of the First Division at Cantigny Farm, and the 80th birthday celebration for Weymouth Kirkland (McCormick's former law partner). Most of the images are black and white negatives, but the collection also includes a few color positive transparencies.
